Illustration Friday - SEARCH

A common sight in the fall, but at this time of year, I expect to see squirrels searching for acorns under a blanket of snow! With the oddly warm temperatures we've had in New England lately (just a week after getting over a foot of snow dumped on us!) it looks like the squirrels, and all the other critters will have a much easier time searching for food!

Speaking of searching for food, it was only last month that I went to get in my car to head to work on a 6 degree morning, only to find these guys searching for food a few yards away.... I felt so bad for them, pecking & scratching at the snow. I HAD to do something.....

As luck would have it, I happened to have a loaf of bread in my work bag, to bring for lunch. I didn't know if turkeys liked bread (I realize they are often stuffed with bread crumbs, but I didn't think they actually HELPED with that process) & I knew they could be dangerous - especially when there were 7 of them, all taller than my waist...it WAS quite possible I could experience death by turkey..... but I was willing to take that chance. There WAS that moment of terror when they stampeded toward me after I threw the first pieces at them, but after that, we were cool. They came right up to me, making their cute little turkey noises (which, by the way, did NOT sound like 'gobble' 'gobble.') I knew I shouldn't be feeding them, but I couldn't help myself. Needless to say, they ate my lunch, and I was late for work. I told my boss I was "feeding the birds." :)

As always, I appreciate you stopping by & your comments!

  1. I don't know if I would have been brave enough to exit the car to feed the turkeys. They really can get vicious! Love the little searching squirrel :)

  2. I would have felt bad for the turkeys too. But I doubt I would have stopped for them. I hope they were grateful! I love the expression on your squirrel - he's so relieved to find a snack!

  5. I can't think of a better reason to be late for work! I've only seen turkeys a few times and every time felt like it was an extra special moment. Lucky you, and a very cute squirrel :)

  6. I know they can be vicious but I have found turkeys to be pretty tolerant of us humans! I'm sure they were grateful for the lunch. The squirrel is adorable!

    1. Yeah, but it should be a good match-up for the Super Bowl. For the Pats to get to the AFC Championship game with such key players being out (specifically Gronk & Wilfork, and of course, losing Hernandez to that little thing called a murder charge, quite possibly 3 before we're done....) was more than most of us expected. I think the disappointment is a lot more acute in your neck of the woods.... but it still sucks. :(

    2. Please Mr. Manning, annihilate the Chickenhawks in the Bowl. We hate them and their stupid 12th man attitude.
(first time in my life I will be rooting for the Broncos)

    3. I've got players from both teams for my fantasy team, so I'm not caring who wins as much as who puts up the numbers! :) (Although I will not cheer for Manning!)

  12. although unlikely, death by squirrel would be rather funny too.
Yet harder to admit too... ~~There's less stigma to being a casualty of Death by Turkey.
